Wienerberger acquires German clay paver producer Penter

Goal: steady improvement in earnings power of German clay paver business

Wienerberger, the world’s largest producer of bricks and the number two in clay roof tiles in Europe, will become the leader on the German clay paver market with the acquisition of the second largest clay paver producer, Penter Klinker Klostermeyer KG in Lower Saxony. Penter, an established family company, generates revenues of approximately € 10 million with its plant in Bramsche north of Osnabrück. “This production facility is located in the primary selling area for clay pavers in Germany, and represents an optimal addition to the Wienerberger plant structure. The acquisition of Penter will give Wienerberger a premium clay paver brand with an excellent market position. We plan to use the integration of this company into our Group as an opportunity to increase synergies in the clay paver segment and realize a sustainable improvement in earnings“, commented Heimo Scheuch, member of the Managing Board of Wienerberger AG, on the reasons for the investment. The parties have agreed not to disclose any information on the purchase price for this transaction.

High-quality clay pavers for the German market The well-known Penter plant was founded in 1899, and today produces high-quality clay pavers for Germany and numerous export markets with 69 employees and a plant capacity of roughly 55 million brick units. Long-term considerations led the owners to decide in favor of a sale to Wienerberger to guarantee the continuation of production at this site. “Penter will form an important strategic addition to our paver line. In addition, we intend to utilize the company’s know how to strengthen our position in this attractive market segment by continuing the Penter brand“, commented Klaus Hoppe, Managing Director of Wienerberger in Germany, on the transaction.

Bolt-on projects of approx. € 300 million in 2006

The acquisition of this clay paver plant is part of the profitable Wienerberger bolt-on growth program, which is expected to total more than € 300 million in 2006.
