INDIA: Make use of fly ash brick mandatory

Outlining the advantages of fly ash brick over clay brick, the members of Fly Ash Bricks and Blocks Manufacturers Federation (FABMAFED) urged the government to make the use of fly ash bricks mandatory in the state as these are environment friendly and generate employment opportunities.
"The fly ash bricks are not only more durable than the clay bricks but also come cheaper.
They do not pose any danger to environment unlike the clay bricks, which excavate topsoil from the agricultural fields, causing damage to cultivable land.
The government should encourage the fly ash brick units in the state," said Ashish Nangalia, vice-president and chairman of FABMAFED.
He further said the association is ready to provide free-of-cost training to those clay brick makers willing to switch to fly ash brick manufacture. An estimated 200 fly ash brick units operate in the state and produce 5 million bricks per day.
Surajit Basu, the president of the association, said the state could excel in the manufacture of fly ash bricks because of the presence of several thermal power plants, whose fly ash is used in making the bricks.
"The fly ash brick unit generates employment opportunities as it can be established with a minimum capital of a few thousand rupees and a small plot of land. It can help to check migration," he said.
