Malaysia: Another green award for PBAPP

The residue produced by the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant can now be recycled into a material for making clay bricks.

PENANG Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has added another feather to its cap, thanks to its eco-friendly ways.

The corporation clinched the top spot in the Penang State Innovation Awards 2016 for the Non-ICT category with its waste recycling project.

PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said the recycling project involved the conversion of residue from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant into a value-added material that may be used to produce clay bricks for construction projects.

He said the plant was the largest water treatment plant in the state, producing more than 80% of the treated water in Penang daily.

“It is classified as ‘scheduled waste’ that has to be disposed of safely,” Jaseni said in a recent statement.

He said the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant generated an average of 300 metric tonnes of residue daily.

He said that PBAPP, through research and development since 2009, discovered a way to recycle the residue.

This move has brought several benefits to the environment.

“Recycling scheduled waste in an innovative manner was in line with the state’s Cleaner and Greener initiative.

“This also potentially reduced the waste disposal costs.

“The reusing of the residue also helped the brick-making industry and consequently, helped the construction industry too,” Jaseni said.

He said the award, which was handed to PBAPP by Deputy State Secretary Datuk Ghazali Derahman recently recognised innovative public sector initiatives.

He said the award also helped promote creativity and initiative among state administration personnel and to improvethe quality of services for the benefit of the people.

Jaseni added that the waste recycling project also won PBAPP the Innovation Award Runner-Up trophy at the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia 2017.

The event was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Oct 13.
