Alabama brick business sold to Texas company

One of Montgomery's oldest businesses, Jenkins Brick & Tile, has been sold to a Texas company.

Acme Brick Co. in Fort Worth is purchasing Jenkins Brick for an undisclosed amount. Jenkins Brick spokesman Ron Taylor said Acme Brick bought the company for its plants because it is more economical to sell bricks near where they are made.

Acme is part of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Acme President Dennis Knautz said the deal extends the company's reach from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

Jenkins Brick started in Montgomery in 1903 and had plants in Montgomery, Coosada and Moody. It also had 20 sales facilities in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said the company was struggling because of the economy and the sale should help preserve jobs.
